I was addressing the issue of what to use for emergency communication.
However, I can see a team spliting up by a distance a couple of hundred
yards or so to scout for the easiest route to a cache. At that distance
it's a little to far for voice (unless you've got a good set of lungs, then
your liable to draw to much attention to your team <grin>), but either
FRS/CB will handle that distance without much difficulty. The cost of FRS
radios is so low, that they're almost disposable items and probably worth
considering as an addition to your cache pack, particularly for multi-person
teams. I do feel that their value as an emergency communications device is
very limited.
As for the helicopter: See the attached jpg. I'm the guy with the OD
