Dogs can be a bit of a deterrent but unless they are specialy trained to
protect the owner or property I would not rely on them.

Having Investigtated 100's of burglarys I have had only one incident where a
family dog actually was effective in deterring the bad guy. Owner came home
and found his dog with a very large lump on his head but an even bigger
smile on his dogs face. Walked inside and his house was covered in blood
(bad guys). From the amount of blood it was easy to tell that after breaking
in the dog and the bad guy had quite a nice little fight. The bad guy lost
the fight and retreted into the bathroom where he barricaded himself in the
bathroom to patch up his wounds. From the claw marks on the bathroom door
the dog wanted to go for round #2 but the bad guy was able to make a quick
dash and escape. I don't remember the breed but the dog was about 75-80lbs.

Most of the time the bad guy simply lets the dog outside and locks him out
of the house.
