Back in 1997 I bought a Garmin 12XL from REI.  I still use it.

Interface is relatively simple.

Earlier this year I bought a Garmin eTrex for my daughter.

Whatever GPSr you decide on, you should make sure it's a
12-channel parallel receiver:

Nowadays, that shouldn't be a problem.
