I also found this cache two years ago (as of September 26th). I can
remember having all these scraps of paper on my desk as I tried to
decipher the code. In the end, I had to beg someone for a clue on the
azgeocachers' IRC.
I can't quite remember how it worked, but I remember it being a very
cool way to encode a message. It is definitely not like the Geocaching
(A-Z, Z-A) encryption. It's more complex than a one-for-one
substitution. I don't want to give away too much, but I don't want you
to give up, frustrated. Maybe just do a google search for different
encryption methods and see if one of those works.
Or maybe you can email the Tres Hombres to see if they'll lend you a
hand. You can click on their name on the cache page to get to their
profile, where you can send an email.
Hang in there!

Hi, Cynde,
Welcome to Geocaching and welcome to the list.

I did this cache almost two years ago, and it remains one of the most
challenging I ever encountered (at least of the ones I've successfully
completed). I'm not sure I remember the encryption technique, but I'm
certain it is not a simple substitution cipher. Anything more detailed
than that probably shouldn't be discussed on the list, as other readers
may not appreciate seeing the information if they're still working on
it.
