Sorry if this is a bit off-topic.
We have some guests from Europe who would like to see ghost towns. My
favorite is Duquesne, however the last time we went there a guy was
boarding up windows and wasn't happy we were there. It seems the town is
private property. However my understanding is that the road through the
town is FR128 in the Coronado National Forest and that is it a public
road. So as long as we don't walk off the road we are within our rights
to stop and look at the buildings (from the road).
I tried calling the Forest Service but they were hopeless. They couldn't
confirm that the road through the town is public. All they could say is
that it isn't marked as closed on their map and if the county is grading
the road then it must be public.
On my 1:24,000 USGS maps the forest roads are not numbered, and I
couldn't find any maps online that showed this road as being numbered.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this road, or perhaps the number of
someone in the Forest Service who can give a definitive answer?
thanks, Andy
