Did you change the name on the device?

What is a Smittyware ID? (back to top)
No, this is not the same thing as the Owner Name or Device ID. No, you do not need to purchase the software to download it, install it and get this information.
The Smittyware ID is an eight-character code, consisting of numeric digits and/or the letters A-F, used to create a registration code for a particular Pocket PC device. It is based on the owner name that you set on the device, but is used instead to allow for possible characters in the name which may not work so well for the registration process.
To get this code, and to enter the registration code later, select Options > Register from the menu bar on the application's main screen. The main screen is the one you see when you first start the program, such as CacheMate's list view.
If you've already made the mistake of using the Owner Name or Device ID to generate a registration code, you may use the Pocket PC code request form to correct it.
My Smittyware ID has changed, and I can't change it back. Help? (back to top)
Of course you can't... at least not directly. As stated above, the ID is based on the Owner Name set on your PDA, and for some reason that has changed, hence the change in the Smittyware ID.
If you can remember what the Owner Name was originally:
- Close the Smittyware application (either using ctrl-Q or the Memory control panel)
- Change the Owner Name back to what it was before
- Restart the application to regenerate the Smittyware ID
If the above procedure fails, it is because you can't recall exactly what the name originally was. In that case, you should request a new code based on the new ID.
I can't seem to run the installer. What do I do? (back to top)
The installer program that you download is intended to run on the PDA, not your desktop PC. Just copy the installer to the PDA using ActiveSync (or an equivalent for your platform, as mentioned below) and run the installer from the Pocket PC's File Explorer.
The main reasons for going that route instead of a normal CAB file were one of size (it's compressed, where CAB files aren't) and to make it easier to install to alternate locations. Another benefit of this technique is the removal of the dependency on a Windows-based desktop platform or, for that matter, a desktop computer at all! There are, for example, ActiveSync equivalents available for Mac OS X (The Missing Sync, PocketMac Pro) and Linux/FreeBSD (SynCE), but none of them can handle Windows-based installers for Pocket PC software.
The odd thing is that the Windows 2000 error when trying to run the installer ("This is a valid executable, but not for this machine type") actually made some sense. Rather than further clarifying it in Windows XP, though, they made it more confusing ("This is not a valid Win32 application").
How do I upgrade to the latest version of a Pocket PC program? (back to top)
Simply download the latest version of the program and install it. While you may install directly over what you have in the case of Pocket PC 2002 and 2003, the best practice in all cases is to uninstall the version you have installed first. If you do this, be sure to select "Yes" when asked if you are in the process of upgrading... this will preserve registration and settings information.

OK
I think what the problem is is that Cachemate now shows it is an unregistered version, just a couple of days ago everything was all registered but now it is showing unregistered and it won't let me register, the ID has changed and I can't get it to accept the registration #. What caused this to happen?

in GSAK select the filter you want then select File Export to cachemate PDB.
Then sync the pocket PC and import the caches into cachemate.
If that is not real helpful, maybe you can let us know what step your getting hung up on?
