GPS baseband delivers
3-m accuracy for under $5
Device is priced about 45% lower than other comparably featured parts

Developed for portable handhelds, the 14-channel Baldur GPS baseband IC is offered as the first such device to achieve a horizontal resolution of as little as 1 m (corrected) and 3 m (autonomous) with a $5 price tag-about 45% lower than the competition. The company claims that the low-cost part will accelerate the growth of existing GPS applications, as well as enable a variety of new ones.


Vertical resolution is 5 m (corrected), and velocity is measured to within 0.1 m/s. The device can receive and process signals from 12 different tracking satellites at the same time and features acquisition sensitivities of -173 dBm and tracking sensitivities of -150 dBm. In addition, the part has two satellite-based augmentation system channels for the Wide-Area Augmentation System, European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, or MultiFunctional Transport Satellite Augmentation System.

Power dissipation is 70 mW under continuous operation at 16 MHz and 18 mW in power-saving mode. The part is housed in an LFBGA package. ($5 ea/100,000-available now.)
