Subject: RE: [Az-Geocaching] altimeter
The brand new watch I got for Christmas (A Highgear Axis Midnight Blue) has an extremely accurate altimeter built in -- along with a compass and a barometer. It seems to agree with my GPS altimeter to within 10 feet or so. The only thing I don't find to be too accurate about it is the temperature gauge, but that's probably because it's smack up against my arm.

Depending on the version of eTrex you have, and how important the altitude
is to the couple, using some GPSrs might cause harm. I know many of them
have to be calibrated and most often they are not. When you change a drastic
altitude it may not be accurate enough.

If it is getting the altitude from GPS signal only (no built in barometer)
you could get in a serious pinch if you get under canopy and get poor
reception.

I am inclined to agree with the comment of buying one from an autoparts
store.. Then they do not have to worry abou thte GPSr batteries going out
while driving through the mountains.

Many maps also have a nice topo altitude on them, again it all depends on
how accurate they need to be, if your talking about knowing the altitude to
within 20', I would be very careful about recommending a GPS to them.

Bringing all you 'space travelers' back to our time- I have
a question. A friend needs to know the altitude wherever
he goes due to his wifes breathing problems. I showed him
my Etrex and how it can tell him such and he was quite
interested. Have any of you got opinions on what might be
the best -and easiest- thing for him to use-he is only
interested in 'easy use'. and since he does the driving she
would have to learn to use it!
