I just returned from the Mesa Ranger Station. My Lancer and Kiva's
Lost Goldmine cache was on the list of caches soon to be removed, when
in actuality it is on State Trust Land...just barely. So I went down
to make sure boundaries had not changed and to make sure they realized
where the cache actually was and would not remove it. The ranger I
spoke with was very nice and said that more than likely one of their
people will probably hike up there and realize that the cache is south
of the boundary and leave it be.
He was personally not real keen on the idea of allowing caches with a
permit citing that it would probably have to go through at the
National Forest Service level, not local, and then you are dealing with
the Government (*shutter*), which probably means archaeological and
cultural studies which in their minds only equals lots of money. Was
he reaching for the worst case scenario here? Yes. But they are going
to discuss it further. He was also afraid that the restrictions that
might have to be placed on caching (if it is allowed) would take the
"fun" out of finding a cache.
He did say that everyone who has come into the office has been very
nice and explained their views and have been a pleasure to talk with
even though it's an unpleasant topic. He did say they have had a few
phone calls that have been pretty nasty. Just keep that in mind if you
decide to voice your opinion.
We did discuss virtual caches and he saw nothing wrong with this type
of cache. I know, I know...some of you despise virtuals...but that may
be what we have to live with in the Superstition Wilderness.
