From the FAQ on geocaching.com ( http://www.geocaching.com/faq.asp )

What are the rules in Geocaching?

Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very
simple:
1. Take something from the cache
2. Leave something in the cache
3. Write about it in the logbook
Where you place a cache is up to you.

So it looks by the "rules" that you have to write something in the log book.

My personal opinion is that if you aren't signing the logbook, you aren't
geocaching.

PS. I didn't know that Geocaching.com had decided on an official FRS channel
for geocachers (2 primary and 12 alternate)
The only thing about that is, at least the way I have geocached, that I'm not
going to be doing a lot of talking on a radio, because I ten to stick with
anyone that I'm with so that I can companyand safety with me at all times...
Unless im talking to a man about a horse :)
