I've used all sorts of images.  Some companies prefer vector based images...
but for the most part, you can send them a sketch on a napkin and the
in-house artist will convert what ever artwork you have to an image they can
use to create the die.  They will send you back the mint artwork for your
approval.

I've done some coins designs entirely in MS paint... Ok... so I used MS Word
to 'arc' the text and paste it into paint.

The point is, the mint artist has to convert it anyway, but you should try
to give them the best image possible of what you want to start out with.
