I was a military ops tester for GPS, and while navigating a fast frigate, USS Antrim, out of Mayport Harbor, we found that GPS would  have had us on the rocks. We were using a visual range to navigate the river, but monitoring GPS along the way. Something was certainly wrong with the constellation, but the Air Force guys flying the space segment would never own up to a problem. This, of course was in the very early days. Also went out with some SEAL teams, but that is a story for another day.

  I did have one that was interfaced with an autopilot on a boat.  The electronic compass would steer the boat.  Very cool.  However, in the wrong hands (stupid people) I've seen boats driven up on reefs and sunk.  The guy tried to sue the manufacturer for the cost of the repairs, I seem to recall that that plan didn't work out for him.  His props were over a $1000 a piece, ever see what a boulder does to bronze propellers?  It drove one of the blades through the hull which is what caused the leak. 
  So, do you really want a GPS to drive our cars?
