[Az-Geocaching] Best Route

There's great caching around Payson and it's 20 degrees cooler. On one excision  up the it was 105F in PHX and 57F on the Control Road--well, that was after a T-storm.

  It so nice to see people use the word Christmas.  Having moved from the East Coast to Missouri (and now to Arizona) I'm glad to see the trend reversing where Christmas was demoted to "Winter Holiday" or "Seasons Greetings".  This age of PC  has, IMHO, ruined so many things.  There is nothing wrong to being sensitive to others and their traditions but why did we have to lose ours?  I see nothing wrong with a Merry Christmas or a Happy Chanukah when appropriate and that list can be expanded as well to respect others holidays.

  I also see that the weather forecast is for HOT, may not be doing mucn caching when I get to Florence and Apache Junction.

It is true that you pass through both the White Mountain Apache Reservation and the San Carlos Apache Reservation, but the road is well patrolled by DPS and not by Reservation law enforcement.  

    If you do come through that way, look for the Christmas tree that's decorated year round.  It's on the north side of the road between the Carrizo creek bridge and the Cibeque turn off.  It's just inside the canyon that you come out of and get to the passing lane before the  the Cibeque turn off.  It's easy to see heading south, but if you know where to look you'll see it when your driving north.  Every year it has a new set of decorations.

      The US60 route is through Indian Reservations..  Can't count on cell coverage, but it is sporadically patrolled.

      Thanks for all the great advice,  I agree that the safest route would be all
      Interstate but right now I have a hard time seeing myself drive to Flagstaff 
      and past Sedona (just love it there) to get to AJ.  For the next few years 
      we will be making this trip several times a year so finding the most
      efficient route also comes into play.  The trek from Show Low to Globe is 87 
      miles of two lane non expressway which is quite twisted in parts.  Not sure 
      what the speed limit is or if gas is readily available,  Hitting an elk
      along Rt 87 would make for a bad day.  What critters are along Rt 60?  Also, 
      if we do break down, any cell phone signal (Verizon) and would we run into 
      trouble from others traveling that road?  [Had trouble in New Mexico a few
      years back when "locals" were checking out the truck with the out of town 
      plates, looked like they had a "bump and run" in mind.  They tailed us for a 
      good long while with plenty of chances to pass, which they eventually did.
      I guess the NRA sticker on the back may have helped change their minds].
