[Az-Geocaching] New changes at Groundspeak

Depends on whether or not you're buying. :) My wife nearly blowing up our
house last week took money I had allocated to...nothing. The lesson learned
is that when you come upstairs to an entire floor filled with natural gas,
DO NOT make turning on a light switch that activates 4 incandescent bulbs,
your first decision.

That said, if I had the opportunity to do what you seem to be reading into,
it would make a great birthday present *wink wink nudge nudge*.

In a lot of cases, you just get lucky and find one with that mission.
However, if you want to spend a little time doing so, you can do a search of
caches in your area (found and not found) that contain TBs and look at their
missions. If one of them has something to do with your trip and being able
to fulfill the mission, by all means go for it. Other times, someone on the
listserv will have a TB or 3 in their possession with a mission that fits
your trip.

Case in point: I have THE Moun10Tyke Geobash coin in my possession right
now. The intent of the cachers who gave it to me is to have it travel
around Eastern Montana a bit before heading to all points east on a race
against Daddy's Moun10bike Geobash coin where the goal is Ohio before a
return trip to WA, home of the Moun10* family. If the goal wasn't so
specific, I'd fly it down to circulate in the hot zone before moving
elsewhere.

We are new to this geocaching adventure. We love finding new places as much
as our young kids (5 & 8) love finding the caches. We are traveling to San
Diego this weekend to visit grandpa who has selected some geocaches based on
places he wants to visit with the kids (beach, Sea World, etc.) How do we
come across a travel bug that wants to hitch a ride to a new cache near the
Pacific Ocean?

For those, like myself, who avoid the forums I noticed these two today and
thought I would share:

------------ Regarding TB Logging ------------------
Lately there has been an increase in logging activity for Travel Bugs and
Geocoins. Unfortunately many people were picking up and dropping these items
into the same geocache so they could increase their find count or receive a
new trackable icon in their profile. As a result we have created a new log
type which also goes towards your profile count without causing unnecessary
extra movements for the trackable item.

The new log type is called "Discovered it" and can be used if you have the
tracking number for the icon. Please use this if you have no plans to move
the Travel Bug or geocoin to a new location.

------------ Regarding the changing of Names ---------------

We're working on customizing an application for use with Geocaching.com
<http://Geocaching.com> that will require us to lock down the ability to
change your username. As a result on May 15th we will be locking down the
username change feature on the web site.

The technical issue relates to a fundimental part of their application that
stores usernames in the database outside of the account data. This means
that if we did make username changes in our account database it would
require a tremendous effort to automatically update the other system with
the username change.

Generally sites don't allow name changes like we've been allowing over the
last 5 years, so we're moving towards the generally accepted standard for
most web sites. It's an unfortunate change but necessary considering the
importance of the new features.

For those who just can't live without changing their usernames we'll do our
best to come up with some tools to move your information over to a new
username. You can already do adoptions <http://www.geocaching.com/adopt> to
your new account but there is no current way to move other information like
bookmark lists, premium memberships, or log entries.

 (UPDATED WITH)

The lockdown has been changed to May 20, so you have a few more days to get
your name changes in.

---------------------------

That is all I have. :)
