[Az-Geocaching] Adopt-a-highway

I wanted to do something on this level anyway when I started the program,
but didn't know if that would have been too frequent to keep people
interested in helping with the cleanup.  I was hopeful after the July
cleanup, where we hit the northbound side and completely cleaned it up, and
took care of a significant portion of the southbound side of the highway,
that this would make it easier to maintain in the future.  

As I've said in the past, the lettering on our signs is much larger than any
of the others I've seen, thus making the sign and the 'organization' stand
out more to those who drive this highway.  It should be kept up to a level
that we can be proud of, but only active participation can make that happen.

I, for one, would be willing to help in a clean-up every two months or so.
They don't all need to be 'Event Caches', and earn me a smiley to get my
interest. We really need this area to look good and show our dedication to
our CITO ethic!

signed up for the Adopt-A-Highway program, we were given a one mile stretch
of the northbound side of the highway.  When we arrived to do our initial

northbound side of the highway, and spotted the southbound.

Brian Cluff's message didn't mention which side of the highway the complaint
was about.  It's possible the individual noticed the southbound side of the
highway, which was last cleaned on 7/11/04 (over 8 months ago).  It's
possible this side of the highway does look bad!  If I remember correctly,
we're supposed to do our cleanups every three months.  So far we've been
staggering our cleanups because we've been given two sides of the highway
instead of the one side that we signed up for.  

So far we've had three cleanups in the one year since we began on 4/17/04
(we're behind on our agreement to the Adopt-A-Highway program).

Maybe it's time to do a complete cleanup of both sides of the highway and
start a regular schedule to keep both sides cleaned.

Unfortunately, it MAY be the dirtiest part of the road because of its 
proximity to the landfill.  However, whenever there has been a cleanup, 
there is a VERY noticeable difference, and the area is clean when we have
been through with it.  I doubt that it is the dirtiest on a regular basis,
because in my time traveling the Beeline, I've never seen another group
cleaning anything.

As for the median, we aren't allowed to cross the highway and pick up 
traffic there (unfortunately).  This is a safety issue and is not allowed
per ADOT.  There is also a limitation that we can technically pick up trash 
along the highway.  If I'm not mistaken, it's within 10'.  Of course, having
to get in/out of vehicles, it's easy to 'violate' this rule without even
really thinking about it.

Sport Trac/K (sp?) adopted the program and had a clean-up a few months ago,
toward the end of the year I believe.  It's due for another one, but it
would be great if it could be held on CITO Day.

I was just sent a message privately from someone that was concerned that the
area of road that we are in charge of is the dirtiest part of the road?

Can anyone back that up?

Is it possibly due to people picking up the trash aren't allow to get near
the road to pick it up? (am I wrong about that rule.. and if I'm not, is
there a way around it so that the median and close by chunk of road can also
be picked up so we don't look bad?)

Do we need to start organizing another event?

I can't remember who adopted the adopt-a-highway thing..
