Small explosion reported at ASU facility
04:07 PM Mountain Standard Time on Thursday, March 25, 2004

Staff reports

Scattered debris is all that remains of a concrete garbage container located
at the Arizona State University research park after police say a bomb that
was placed inside the receptacle exploded.

According to Sgt. Dan Masters of the Tempe Police Department, a security
guard on patrol heard the explosion and discovered that some kind of small
device had been placed in a trash can near a bus stop.

The security guard said he initially suspected that a car may have run into
the garbage can. But Tempe police say the placement of the explosive device
was no accident.

"It's a significant device that again obliterated the garbage can," Masters
said.

Masters said that had anyone been near the can at the time of detonation,
"the potential for serious injury or death would've occurred."

The nature and composition of the bomb have yet to be determined. Police say
they are waiting for lab tests. Any information will be turned over the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Thursday's small explosion occurred only six days after Tempe police
received a bomb threat at the Wells Fargo arena on ASU's main campus.

Last Friday, police discovered two 1-gallon bottles filled with an
unidentified liquid with wires attached to a clock and a battery.

The threat was determined to be a hoax.

The ASU research park is owned by the regents but is not otherwise
associated with the university.
