Hi Andy,

I'm probably going to have to put together some legal statement on this, but here is how I envision it. All data submitted it property of the person who submitted it. I try and get as much data as possible from the public domain so that it's free to use by everybody, and there are no issues. But, if you submit a track for inclusion, I believe you own that track (since you created it), and I guess are effectively licensing it for Southwest Trails' use. SW Trails will ALWAYS be free, so I don't plan on making any money off of other people's work. It takes quite a bit of effort to get tracks into this product, but it's a labor of love, and I'm hoping it can stay that way. I may accept donations to cover software/hosting expenses in the future.

I may work something out with the Trails Co-Op, supplier of most of the data I have now, to make raw data available to everybody. I certainly have no problems sharing any tracks created by myself. You can download tracks for most of the trails I have right now by going to http://www.redtrails.com/.

As I move from the alpha to the beta and then final release stage, I'll be more explicit with licensing questions. It'll likely be a creative commons license.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark,

When a person submits the data, who owns it?

Will people have access to the raw data derived from everyone's contributions?

What license will you use to redistribute people's contributions?

Hi,

Some of you may recall earlier this year when I started a brief thread about creating an overlay mapset for Garmin GPS receivers that contains trails in the Southwest. Well, that project is now a reality, and I have just released the first alpha version today! You can check it out at : http://www.outdoor-resources.com/SW_Trails/

This mapset is designed to transparently overlay any existing maps you have on your Garmin GPSr. With this mapset, you can see, and follow, and trails that are in your area. No longer do you need to download tracks or routes to your GPSr when all you want to do is have the trail. Assuming that your desired trail is in the current data set, you're covered!

I would very much appreciate people at least checking out the web page and providing constructive feedback. This project is in it's infancy, and there is lots of work to be done. But, in my own field testing, it's proven to work pretty well so far. I intend to allow user contributions in the very near future, so you can send me new trails or corrections to current trails. Anything that makes it better!

Thanks!
