Not far from home there's a short peak called Squaw Nipple. :-) I am a little irked at how the TBs were distributed this year, because there didn't appear to be any sort of quota per state so that they were evenly distributed. As I understand it, the northeast got most of them, and very few made it up here apparently. I found out about the distribution method too late and my form didn't get there in time. Ironically, the one we know of in this area is now sitting on my desk at home after having ventured up across the Beartooth Highway via Clarks Fork Canyon, the Morrison Jeep Trail switchbacks (where I came within a few inches of rolling this weekend) and then on to Goose Lake. It's named after Independence Peak, a place I traveled to with the 4x4 club over the Indendence Day weekend. If it wasn't such a chore to get to, I'd drive down to Independence and take a pic ON the summit of the mountain the TB is named after. Now, if the Granite Peak GJTB makes it up here, I'd have to make a weekend hike up there and visit my West Rozebuzz cache (on the way to the summit). The tallest mountain in the state at 12,499' requires some clinging to the rock face and shimmying (sp?) across a hundred feet or so of very small cracks for foot holds on a near vertical face. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v318/b_casteel/Project%20JEEP/Fun/07-01-06 %20Independence/ Pics of the Independence ride. I miss Arizona often, but it's trips like this that remind me so vividly what I love about living in Montana. When I get the pics from last weekend posted, watch out. The Morrison switchbacks and Goose Lake shots are phenomenal. Oh, and if you want to confirm the exact number/names of GJTBs 'issued' to a state, just do an Advanced Search for TBs and use (AZ) for the search params. I thought some of you might like a list of the ones named after mountains in Arizona. This is the complete list... as far as I can tell (as opposed to my previous message). I may have missed one or two, but I'm pretty sure this is all of them. I'd really like to get my hands on Wishbone Mountain for sentimental reasons. Agassiz Peak Antelope Mountain Apache Butte Aspen Butte Aubineau Peak Baldy Peak Barfoot Peak Bear Mountain Big Cienega Mountain Big Lake Knoll Bill Williams Mountain Blue Peak Boardshack Knoll Bog Butte Boundary Butte Brown Butte Burke Point Burke Point Burnt Mountain Burro Mountain Cerro Gordon Mountain Chiricahua Peak Clark Peak Diamond Butte Doyle Peak Escudilla Mountain Fern Mountain Flys Peak Fremont Peak Gobbler Peak Gobbler Point Gobbler Point Gooseberry Butte Grand View Peak Grant Hill Greens Peak Hawk Peak Heliograph Peak Hochderffer Hills Humphreys Peak Hutch Mountain Ida Peak Indian Peak Juan Garcia Mountain Kendrick Peak Ladybug Peak Lake Mountain Little Elden Mountain Loco Knoll Matthews Peak McKays Peak Merrill Peak Mica Mountain Miller Peak Milligan Knoll Monte Vista Peak Navajo Mountain Newman Hill Newman Hill Noble Mountain Odart Mountain Old Baldy O'Leary Peak Paint Rock Paradise Butte Pastora Peak Pat Knoll Pat Knoll Plain View Peak Pole Knoll Pool Knoll Portal Peak Raspberry Peak Rees Peak Roof Butte Rose Peak S U Knolls Saddle Mountain Saint Peters Dome San Francisco Mountain Schultz Peak Sentinel Peak Sitgreaves Mountain Sizer Knoll Slide Hill Soldier Butte Sonsela Buttes South Mountain - Apparently not the "South Mountain" in Maricopa County. Spruce Mountain Spud Rock Sugarloaf Peak Sunrise Peak Tenney Mountain Tenny Mountain Tiger Butte Tsaile Peak Turner Peak Turtle Mountain View Point Wahl Knoll Webb Peak West Peak White Ash Peak White Cone White Horse Hills Whiting Knoll Wing Mountain Wishbone Mountain Zilbetod Peak Some interesting facts that I noticed while getting the list. There are over 20 mountains in Colorado named "Sheep Mountain"... that have a jeep named after them. There are also quite a few mountains with the word "nipple" in them. For the name "Squaw Peak", CA has 3, WY has 2, and ID, MT and UT have one, but as we all know, AZ no longer has one. Jake - Team A.I.
