An omnidirectional cantenna would do wonders for such an effort.

If your going to have a laptop and a gps in your vehicle, you might want to
spring for a wireless network card so you can borrow internet connections
for getting the most up to date cache listings.

 

and don't forget to mark those available networks for future reference.
