I believe the rock was over the gun not the cache.  Cache may have just been under leaves.  I see a lot hidden with that much cover.  True, cannot have it covered with dirt (buried).

later in the show the lacy mentioned 34 caches in the area but they started at the last one on her list....
 
the Geocaching connection was the ex girlfriend who had a restraining order out was the first suspect.
 
and if it was illegal was didn't the ranger who spotted the over turned rock mention it???????????? so there it must have been approved that way.....

At least the cache container was a forest service approved one.  They request that cache containers be clear plastic so someone can see that there is nothing dangerous inside before opening it.  Would have beem nice to have more PR about Cache in Trash out.
