Get your butt up here somehow, and the answer is a resounding ABSOLUTELY. I've been up to the area to place a cache called West Rosebuzz, but with my in-laws and both kids there, I couldn't exactly take off on a stroll up the mountain that day. The drive in along the Beartooth Highway is absolutely amazing, and helps the anticipation build to hit the trail. 3 miles beyond is yet another lake (there's actually a series of lakes across the entire range just a few miles from one another), and just beyond that is Granite Peak, the highest peak in the state. Treacherous is just about the perfect word to describe the final few hundred feet to the summit as I understand it. You must basically lay across the mountain, and shimmy from one side to the other with small cracks for your hands/feet to grab. At least one dies each year from it, but I think I'm a few years from attempting this summit, as I need to condition myself to hiking at 11,000' + for such distances. The more I think about it, the more excited I become, because I haven't had a good hike like that in months. It will be approx. 6 miles round trip at about 10k feet to snag a FTF on a cache near Silver Lake in the Beartooth Mountains. There isn't as much in terms of elevation variances here, with Billings being on the fringe of the 'Great Plains' region. Most of the mountains are west of here about an hour or so and beyond. Those hikes will certainly rank among my more memorable cache experiences, as the scenery just makes the hike all the more worth it. I think it has something to do with having some time and effort invested in the search. If we go out and fail to find an urban micro, I don't really feel all that bad. However, if I have driven a ways, hiked some, and have some real effort invested, I am going to try a little harder to find the cache, and with that comes a little greater satisfaction in the find. ____________________________________________________________ Az-Geocaching mailing list listserv@azgeocaching.com To edit your setting, subscribe or unsubscribe visit: http://listserv.azgeocaching.com/mailman/listinfo/az-geocaching Arizona's Geocaching Resource http://www.azgeocaching.com DISCLAIMER: This message is confidential, intended only for the named recipient(s) and may contain information that is privileged or exempt from disclosure under applicable law.
