Folks,
I was driving around last week and started to take
notice of the Adopt-A-Highway signs, and thought it might be a great benefit to
the community (not to mention great PR) if the AZ Geocachers were to
perhaps select a highway segment to maintain. I e-mailed Mark Schalliol
with ADOT, and inquired about the program and asked for a list of available
highway segments around Phoenix. He provided me with a list of
6.
SR87
Both directions MP181-182 (between Mcdowell and
Gilbert)
Both directions MP186-187 (between Gilbert and
Shea)
SB MP200.8-202.8 (near Four Peaks)
SR347 (Maricopa Rd) Both directions
184.24-185.25
SR587 (south of Chandler)
Both directions MP 218.6-221 (Jct 87 to RWCD
canal)
Both directions MP 223-225 (Gila River to
I-10)
The jist of the thing is this: ADOT would
require 4x annually pickup of the area we would be assigned. I would also
consult the powers-that-be and look to get approval for each cleanup as an event
cache, which could conclude with a picnic/bbq at a nearby park. Another
stipulation that I feel is critical is that a working group of 6-10 people would
be needed for each cleanup. I'd truly hope I would be able to get at least
a half-dozen of you out there to help cleanup.
I have all the contact information and would be
willing to assume the role of coordinator for the venture. Let me know by
either private mail or listserv what the interest is among the
people.
BTW, we would get our own sign! Arizona
Geocachers on an Adopt-A-Highway sign would be just too cool.
