This might be of interest.  A satellite message device that you can use to
get help in emergency situations, and you can also check in with friends and
family to let them know where you are, and that all is well.  The unit costs
about $150 and the annual subscription is about the same.  You can even
purchase an insurance policy to pay for your rescue.  It can give you a lot
of security when you are out of cellphone range.
