The problem with hunting benchmarks is that the coords are usually way off because the coords are estimated from a map, not exact. It's not uncommon for them to be 300ft away from the given coords. So imagine searching for something the size of a tin can lid in an area the size of two football fields. The only saving grace is that some benchmarks have textual descriptions of where they can be found, like "35 ft E of centerline of Gilbert Rd, 180 ft N of centerline of Highway US 60". That's all fine and dandy if the marks haven't been removed/destroyed because of construction. It's also quite possible that the landmarks used in the description have disappeared. Of my 7 attempts to find benchmarks, 4 were not found and 3 were found. Another 4 were stumbled upon, usually while geocaching. If I had such success with geocaches, I'd have never gotten involved! I haven't noticed very many folks attempting to find these. Anyone have any thoughts on the joys or unjoys of hunting a benchmark? Thanks. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
