I was a volunteer for Honeywell fire department for about 7 years. Of course this was not wilderness fire-fighting, but we were regulated as to what training we had to have every so often. We had to make sure for just fighting a trash can fire to use an extinguisher, it was six to 8 hours of training per year which also involved fire fighter safety, and fire systems. We were regulated by OSHA on most everything. Some of the guys that are involved had over 120 hours a year in continuous education, but these people were EMT, Structure fire fighters, pumper truck and Hazmat certified. I would hate to guess what the training would be involved for individuals as volunteers, but I would bet it would be very extensive. I am sure it is a lot more than just grabbing a shovel and an axe in fighting wilderness fires. I would love to volunteer, but I know I do not have the time to dedicate to all the training involved. From what I hear the are not highly paid, but either are regular fire fighters, and for what they do in an emergency, they deserve more. I think Christopher Creek is Volunteer. I know that large portions of CA are covered mainly by volunteers, they even use them in striketeams(5 engines) as mutual aid throughout all of Calif. The training for them vary from area to area, some require the same as paid departments and some are less, though the trend from the State level is requiring them to have more training thus driving the volunteers away. They just don't have the time to do all the required training. It seems kind of a shame that the state doesn't have a volunteer firefighters program, kind of like the Guard. Volunteers going out once every so often to get the knowledge so they could be of assistance instead of getting in the way.
