I agree 100% with all that Steve says. I also suggest you get used to
using your new tool and find a bunch of caches first. You'll be in a
better position to hide your first cache. When you do hide your first
cache, please be sure to "average" out the position. (Read you book
about averaging). Like many others, one of my first caches was a quick
hide it, take one reading, and post it. Came to find out my quick
reading was off by over 150'. After making a ~5 mile hike, the first
geocacher couldn't find the cache. I felt pretty bad about it. I now let
the GPS sit on top of the cache for at least a couple minutes averaging
the coordinates every second. This provides a highly accurate reading
for others to find the cache. Of course, that's if they can get past the
clues and figure out the proper coordinates! :)

I see you've already been bitten by the geocaching addiction. You went
to buy a low-end Etrex and came home with a higher model Legend. Way to
go!

Congratulations on succumbing! Assuming that you have created an account
on geocaching.com, all you need to do is go there to log your finds and
your hides. The pages should be fairly self-explanatory.

Let me urge you, though, to find several (8? 10? 12? More?) caches
before you hide any. This will give you a much better idea of what works
and what doesn't, and what makes a "good" cache. I can't tell you how
many times we've visited caches that were disappointing in some way or
another, and then gone back to look at the profile of the hiders to
learn that they've never recorded a single cache found.

Also remember that if you hide a cache you are assuming a responsibility
to maintain it. After you've found some, you'll know whether or not
you're in this game for the long haul. A cache that has no one looking
after it isn't much different than litter.
