Libby, You have to remember that they were driving a BUF PUT ;) I've had my 2wd Dakota in there before. It is a long and bumpy ride, but passable with high clearance. I've been in from two ways - Camp Verde and Strawberry. Both ways are maintained roads since APS has two hydro-electric power plants down there. You do have to be careful of the loose sand near the river at Childs. And if you pick your crossing point, the water shouldn't be too bad, maybe ankle deep.
