Nope, if you give a real, useful hint, I would expect to be required

guess I should have clarified a bit more. Often I'm contacted for a
hint before I even have a chance to contact the cacher (probably
because I specifically tell them to contact me for an additional hint
after posting a DNF). I don't believe I've sent a hint to someone
without asking them first. I usually contact them and ask what area
they were searching and if they'd like a hint or like me to check on
it. <br>
<br>
So do you think I'm being prejudice to out of state cachers by saying
that you must log a DNF before receiving an "additional" hint. Keep in
mind that a helpful hint is already given.<br>

Subject: Re: [Az-Geocaching] decrypted hints<br>
<br>
This is my biggest problem with 'log a DNF...' or 'Email me if you need
a hint'.<br>
It's like a big red flag saying, 'This cache is for locals only, if
you're from out-of-town, forget it!'<br>
My biggest gratification is getting a log on one of my caches from
someone who thought it was interesting enough to include while they
were on vacation/visiting Arizona.<br>
Giving a good hint is an art, and not always easy. A good hint should
spark a thought, or at least narrow down the possibilities, but
shouldn't just spell out the cache location.<br>
My favorite hints for 'remote' caches have warned me to watch for
dangerous wildlife, or admonished me to bring plenty of water...too
late now, I'm already here!<br>
Oh, and I never 'automatically' send a hint if there is a DNF, some
cachers don't want them! If I want/need an extra hint, I'll ask...<br>

While I hate driving 200 miles round trip to log a DNF to get a hint.
Thus making it a 400 mile round trip cache. <br>
<br>
Sometimes people forget that others who do not live within 10 miles of
the cache may come looking for it. On more then one occation we have
been caching across the states (not just in Arizona) with no computer
access for a few days and we cannot log a DNF until we are 200 + miles
from the location. That hint is going to be extremly helpful at this
time. <br>
<br>
Naw, its better to be able to give your friends a hint via phone calls
and anyone else can suffer cause it's fun.<br>

missed the point, I guess. I thought you were saying that we didn't
need to put hints because we could just call someone instead. My bad.<br>
<br>
Oh, I'm aware of worse "hints" than the email for a hint ones. I
require a DNF to be logged before extra hints are given, but I don't
encrypt it in the hint section, that would be mean.<br>
