[Az-Geocaching] Best Route

I have never driven the Show Low route, so I can't speak to it. I will
say that I can't imagine taking the interstate through Flagstaff because
of how far west it takes you out of the way, and because I don't find
I17 south from Flagstaff to be much different from 87 south from
Payson. I just drove the 87 route up and back on Tuesday and was
thinking that it reminded me of the 17 route from Flag (terrain-wise).
Both I17 and 87 are well maintained, 4 lane highways. 87 does have a
minor disadvantage of a few lights as you get into town before you can
hit a freeway, but for the distance saved, I think it's well worth it.

I will concede that I'm comparing the Payson/Mesa stretch with the
Flagstaff/Phoenix stretch only. The route you take to get to Payson
(260, I presume?) vs. taking I40 west to Flagstaff might make the
interstate route worth it, I don't know. I'm also weird because I
actually prefer more difficult driving when I'm tired...I enjoy driving
fun/challenging roads and it gives me something to do/think about.
Driving easy, straight roads when I'm tired is murder for me, as that's
when I really have to fight drifting off. I'm also usually driving a
passenger vehicle; I might feel differently if I were pulling a trailer
or driving a large motor home.
