Well, If I wanted to go check out that cache I would have to say that I was just taking a hike and enjoying the scenery.

  We have also been stopped.

We were going to GCHQ2H and as we approached the gate we were asked if we had a permit by the sheriff that was sitting at the location.

I think we have had to show our permit a total of three times. I am aware of a cache down south of Tucson that was archived because of issues with the person leasing the state land. She was calling the sheriff every time someone came on the property to check them for a permit.

GCK0FE is the cache that caused ahuge stink for some cachers visiting by:
  Rata Amarillo
We went out to try finding this one and we were met with a blocked cattle gate! Someone has wired across the gate making this cache inaccessible by vehicle. I called the State Land Dept to report this as we have a permit and it is illegal to block access. After a couple of calls back and forth I received a call this evening (Wednesday the 5th) and the information that was shared was this: apparently the entrance to that parcel is privately owned, the man I spoke to in the state dept asked what we wanted to drive in there for and I explained that we wanted to see the area and we also were looking for a geocache. He stated that he didn't think that geocaching was permissible on state land as a box is left behind (he already was aware of what geocaching was, I didn't enlighten him). I said that I was simply calling to inform the State Land Dept that I thought someone was blocking access illegally. He thanked me for the info and informed me that there is a foot access gate on the east side of the chunk of land if someone wants to walk in.
  Good luck to anyone else!

  Roving Sprite
Verrrry Interestinnng! We found the cache and also much evidence of horses (although we didn't see any.) When we arrived back at our jeep we also found the local county sheriff (Deputy Karchner of the Karchner Caverns family fame) and a neighbor lady. Deputy Karchner informed us that we had been trespassing on "State Land" and that the lady present had called the sheriff's office since she had a permit to allow her horses to graze on this property and felt that we had no right to be there. Unfortunately, we did not have a permit as the woodcutter recommends above (didn't read his note until after we got back home.) A discussion ensued relative to "what if we did have a permit" - the lady claiming that even if we had one it would still not have been legal for us to go looking for the cache. All agreed that hiking across the land is allowed if you have a permit - the lady however, felt that geocaching does not fall under the definition of "hiking". Interesting legal question!! Deputy Karchner did not state his opionion on the matter. In any case, he took no action against us (probably took pity on two old codgers in their 60s and 70s wandering through the desert!) BE WARNED!! Anyone going after this geocache without a State Trust Land permit is likely to be challenged by the local horse lady who seems to be willing to quickly contact the sheriff's office. And even if you have a permit, this lady may still challenge you! She also warned us that this area is known to be a "drug" exchange area and "you could easily get hit by cars flipping off the freeway" - not sure exactly what she meant by this, but she was obviously trying to dissuade us from coming back. Left arrowhead and copper sample. Returned home with a story to tell to our wives. At least we didn't have to call them to "come bail us out!"

Yes to being checked for permits! A bunch of us were ATVing out around Queen Valley and were stopped. Most of us had permits but 2 did not and had to fill out applications and PAY right there on the spot. We all had to loan them money to get enough for the 2 permits. We were told it is ok to make copies of the permit so you can have one in each vehicle and one in you wallet.
