[Az-Geocaching] CHICKS with TRUCKS - our reply

Holmes, Richard listserv@azgeocaching.com

We found several C w/T's caches this last weekend and thought they were all
great; nicely camouflaged, well hidden, and in interesting places. We hope
they continue to do their thing 'cuz we've really had a good time from their
efforts. As for this forum; well, there are occasionally things said that
the authors didn't mean to be taken the way they were. But ya' know, every
chat or use group that ever was suffers from the same frailty. Sometimes
there are subjects that an individual member should just leave alone; to
wit, I'm still so mad at Christine Leonard that I can't discuss the issue
rationally.

Keep on cachin'

This is going to be our one and only post that you will ever see from us on
this site. We are in this for fun, not politics and debates.

There are several points we would like to make:

1. Most importantly, this is a game!
2. If our caches meet the requirements set by geocaching.com that is ALL
that
matters.
3. We do not do this for stats. We don't now, nor will we ever.
4. We see this as a game of "hide and seek". We will continue to hide and
to seek. If those numbers are a close ratio, we don't care.
5. We will continue to hide as many caches as we want and where we want so
long as geocaching.com continues to approve them.
6. We maintain ALL our caches and will only place them in locations we are
willing to go back to for the purpose of maintainence.
7. If for ANY reason you don't care for our caches, DON'T GO TO THEM.

For a BRIEF explaination of why we place them where we do (not that it is
ANYONES business), none of us are into long hikes for different reasons.
Some simply don't like to hike and another has medical restrictions. For
those reasons, we prefer easy walks and drive-bys. We appreciate other easy

caches and we know there are other people out there with diabilities,
limitations, young children, etc who do appreciate us hiding easy ones. We
are not offended or upset that we can't or don't want to go to a top of a
mountain to find a cache. We simply don't do it and certainly do not
critisize anyone for placing them there. We expect the same respect from
others. If we want your opinion, we will ask for it. If you find a REAL
problem with one of our caches (such as damage, a filled up log book, a
missing cache or something similar) then of course, let us know.

We thank everyone who has given us support through this ordeal and look
forward to running into you on cache hunt.

I just had to chime in here. I can't help myself. I know it is stylish and
everything to
knock Windows, but as I sit here typing this email, my computer (running
Windows XP Pro) has
been up for a bit over 5 weeks. Even 5 weeks ago, I rebooted it because a
program I had just
installed needed it to be rebooted, not because it was crashed. I have a
lot of clients
running Windows on their servers, and many haven't rebooted in months -- one
I know of has been
up since we installed the system in March, for example. Just my personal
experience.

Hiya to all you AZ geocachers!

My name is Heather (I go by Darsantre in my log sigs) and I just wanted to
introduce myself. I'm new to this sport/hobby and first heard about it on
channel 12 news. After seeing that report, I thought to myself 'hey, I can
do this!' So I bought a Garmin eTrex and went out searching. Boy has this
been a challenge! I found my first cache on Sept. 14; in 8 days I've found
10 caches. And I've been doing some serious looking!

I know to you experienced cachers, the urban cachers are "just too easy,"
but I'm getting frustrated at my lack of finding the "easy" ones. Some
sites I've been to about 5 times and still haven't come across the cache
containers. However, I love the fact that I'm up early and out of the house
on the weekends and _doing_ something interesting that I'm finding
challenging and enjoyable!

A little about me: I'm 32, single, a professional educator, have two
wonderful woofies (a Black Lab & a Lhasa Apso), love to travel, speak German
and Spanish, and am working on a second Master's degree at ASU.

I've been telling my sister in England and friends in Belgium, Hong Kong,
Germany and Kazakhstan about this sport. They've all told me to visit them
and they would gladly join me in the hunt. :)

Well, I'm sorry that I missed the potluck today, but I hope to meet other
cachers soon!

Bye for now,
Darsantre

One of the issues I've been wrestling with as we approach The Meeting on
Friday is how the growth of Geocaching increases the probability of
things happening on cache hunts that I think we'd all agree are
undesirable. I'm talking about everything from trailblazing to failing
to properly re-hide a cache.

I think that many times these types of things happen not out of malice
but out of inexperience. I can think of many things that Judi and I did
or didn't do on our earlier cache hunts that still make me shudder with
embarrassment. One of the things one gains from experience is the
realization that you once goofed, but you're sure not going to goof that
way again in the future.

But more beginners means more goof potential. Here's a couple of stats I
just pulled of azgeocaching.com: There were 209 teams with one AZ cache
and no out of state finds. Besides those, there were 478 more teams with
5 or fewer AZ finds AND 5 or fewer Out-of-State finds (trying to
eliminate experienced cachers who find one or two while vacationing
here). Now, even if we assume that half of the finds in the second group
are locationless caches based in Arizona (Yellow Jeep Fever, Carousel,
etc.), that's still over 400 "Neocachers" that are or have been caching
in our state. As a point of comparison, I think when we started caching
about a year ago, finding your first cache automatically put you into
the top 300 in Arizona.

Unlike many of you, I can't even remember how we learned about
Geocaching. But how many of you can remember how (or when) you learned
about azgeocaching.com? (Brian and Jason excepted, of course.) Or the
list server?

I'll bet that the subscribers to this list server (counting the untold
numbers of you who read and don't post) have hidden somewhere between a
quarter and a half of all the caches in the state. Here's what I propose
(and it wouldn't surprise me if some of you are doing it already): Every
time you get a notification that someone's logged one of your caches,
check out the team name. If you don't recognize it, go to the log page
and check out their find count. If they're Neocachers (let's say five
finds or fewer), send 'em an email! Welcome them into the fold, thank
them for finding (or hunting) your cache, let them know about
azgeocaching.com, invite them to the listserv, and offer to help them
with any questions they have. If they wrote about anything in the log
that seems as though they were struggling, mention it to them and offer
to help them out with it. Send them your email address, so they don't
have to go back through geocaching.com. (If you want, check out their
other finds first, and email those cache owners to see if they've beaten
you to it, but it's probably better if they get two or three welcomes
than none.) In other words, become a Geomentor.

I'd love to have us able to tell the land managers on Friday that this
is one of the things we do to promote responsible Geocaching. Please let
me know what you think.

Don't give up, once you get the hang of how AZ cachers
think, it'll be easier. One nice thing is that there
are a lot of types of caches for you to choose from.

Get the one in Hong Kong interested for sure, I need
someone to find one I left in Aberdeen. I was supposed
to go back but the trips get cancelled. :/

Great idea Steve! Let's be proactive in keeping the
trouble away. Someone is more likely to ask questions
if they have already "met" someone else.

As the proud owner of the third-largest collection of Not Found logs in
the state, permit me to welcome you to our collective addiction. The
frustration doesn't go away until you do find them, but sometimes the
frustration enhances the ultimate satisfaction when you do find 'em. As
proof, I offer into evidence our multiple log entries on Holiday Cache
(http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=16160). It took us
four tries before we were successful, although I think after all our
whining they did upgrade the difficulty rating from 1 to 2. This wasn't
as a result of being inexperienced, either. When we did finally find it,
it was the 147th notch in our GPSr.

> Some sites I've been to about 5
> times and still haven't come across the cache containers.

Since I can't locate any Not Found logs for you I can't offer you any
specific advice, but keep in mind that lots of urban caches are hidden
for the purpose of providing a challenging find (very small containers,
well-camouflaged, etc.).

And that is what it's really all about. Happy caching!

can't wait till this meeting is over so I can find some time to go

Steve when you go caching again would you like some company as I need to sit
again with a master...

Heather the feelings you have are very normal

the first cache we found took less than 3 minutes the second cache took
nearly 7 hours and 4 visits and I then knew what it meant to be as blind as
a deaf bat.. Bats do have poor eyesight but rely on their ears for the sonic
signal. so a deaf bat would be pretty bad off...

as you continue and even become addicted you will develop what I call
Satellite Karma, this is when you can walk right up to cache and other times
you find yourself in a farmers field..
